The Tree of Life: one human family, many expressions

The spiritual family tree is a way of reflecting on common roots, diversity, respect and the many paths through which human beings search for truth.

Day 5 explores the Tree of Life, another image used in Brahma Kumaris teachings. A tree has roots, a trunk, branches, leaves and many stages of growth. The image helps us hold two truths at once: humanity is deeply interconnected, and people express spirituality through many cultures, traditions and histories.

Roots and branches

A healthy tree does not reject its branches for being different from the root. Diversity is part of the tree’s expression. In the same way, spiritual study should not become an excuse for disrespect.

Raja Yoga asks the learner to deepen personal understanding while recognising the dignity of other souls and the sincerity that can exist in many traditions. The point of spiritual knowledge is not to make the ego feel superior.

See the soul before the label

Day 1 taught soul-consciousness at an individual level. The Tree extends it socially. Before “Catholic”, “Muslim”, “Hindu”, “Buddhist”, “atheist”, “Filipino”, “Indian”, “Australian”, “manager” or “student”, Raja Yoga invites us to see a soul.

This does not erase meaningful differences. It changes the order of perception: first spiritual dignity, then role, culture or opinion.

Respect without losing discernment

Seeing everyone as a soul does not mean approving every behaviour. The intellect still discerns. You may disagree, set boundaries or refuse harmful conduct.

Soul-conscious respect means you try not to turn disagreement into dehumanisation. The person remains a soul even when the action is wrong. This is demanding because the ego often gains energy by creating “us” and “them”.

Belonging to something larger

Loneliness can intensify when identity contracts around one small role or group. The image of a human family broadens belonging.

In meditation, remember that countless souls are living through joys, losses, responsibilities and hopes at this very moment. This does not remove personal problems, but it can soften isolation and awaken benevolence.

Spiritual influence

A tree is nourished at the roots. Raja Yoga uses this image to suggest that inner change influences relationships and atmosphere.

You may not be able to reform an entire family, workplace or city. But you can become a point of steadiness within it. One person who listens calmly, refuses gossip, speaks respectfully and maintains self-control changes the emotional field around them. Today, practise being that kind of influence.

Reflection

Write your answers if you can. The aim is observation, not a perfect answer.

Practise through the whole day

Morning

12 minutes — Visualise people you will meet today as souls before roles. Practise equal regard without losing discernment.

Midday

5 minutes — Choose one person you usually label. Replace the label with: “a soul playing a different role and carrying a different history.”

Evening

15 minutes — Review whether your presence made the atmosphere lighter, heavier or unchanged. Choose one improvement.

Extended guided meditation

Return to the awareness: I am a soul.

I have a name, nationality, profession and history, but I am more than these labels.

Bring to mind someone you love. See beyond the face and role. See a conscious being, a soul, with its own journey.

Now bring to mind someone neutral — a person you passed in a shop, lift or street. They too are a soul carrying thoughts, responsibilities, memories and hopes.

Now gently bring to mind someone difficult. Do not excuse harmful behaviour. Keep your discernment and boundaries. But experiment with separating the soul from the behaviour.

This is a soul who may be acting through old sanskars, fear, ego or pain. I do not need to hate the soul in order to say no to the behaviour.

Remember the Supreme Soul, the spiritual Parent of the human family. Allow the awareness of one family of souls to broaden the heart.

I can be firm and benevolent. I can disagree without losing dignity. I can protect myself without feeding hatred.

Imagine your home, workplace or centre as a small branch of the human tree. What vibration do you want to bring to that branch today — respect, patience, truth, cooperation or courage? Sit with that quality and carry it into one real interaction.

Before you leave Day 5

Mark this day complete after you have read the lesson and done at least one meditation. Return to the ideas during ordinary activity rather than racing ahead.
